1. Represented Hosie Wes Sacks & Brelsford in its merger with Perkins Coie
(Effective October 1, 1998)
Hosie Wes, with offices in Menlo Park, San Francisco and Anchorage, Alaska
specializes in internet, media and corporate finance law. Its high
technology clients include Yahoo, Quicken, Financial Network and SRI
Consulting. The seventeen lawyer firm,
was considered one of the top boutiques in Northern California and was
founded five years ago by lawyers who left Heller, Ehrman, White &
McAuliffe and Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison. They include Spenser Hosie
(J.D. Davis 1981, Order of the Coif; Editor Law Review); Edward J. Wes
(J.D. Boalt 1977, Articles Editor, California Law Review); Steven B. Sacks
(J.D. Davis 1980, Order of the Coif) and James F. Brelsford (J.D. Davis
1980, Order of the Coif). Mr. Brelsford, who has become Perkins Coie's
Northern California managing partner said, "Like many of our client
start-ups, we formulated a plan to be so well-positioned that we would be
a highly desirable merger candidate." Robert Giles, Perkins Coie's
managing partner said Hosie Wes is "an extraordinary fit" with his firm
citing synergy among both firms and clients such as: Amazon.com;
InfoSpace.com; and Real Networks.

2. Facilitated
the merger of Layman, Jones & Dye with Bryan Cave
The merger gave Bryan
Cave, a 400-lawyer St. Louis based international law firm greater transactional
strength in California. Layman, Jones, a prominent Orange County business firm,
gained greater client entree and added support for its strategic growth
objectives. Steven Sunshine, former Layman, Jones managing partner (our focal
point with the firm) was elected managing partner of Bryan Cave's California
offices, numbering approximately 85 attorneys.

3. Represented
Petillon & Davidoff on its merger with Gipson, Hoffman & Pancione
Lee R. Petillon (Boalt
Hall LL.B. 1959) and Brian L. Davidoff (University of Witwatersrand, South
Africa; University of Miami, LL.M.) moved their bankruptcy and high tech
boutique to Gipson, Hoffman & Pancione.

4. Represented King, Weiser, Bazar & Jacobs in its merger
with Van Etten, Suzumoto & Haag
King, Weiser, a transactional firm
specializing in general corporate, business and real estate had its name on the
door for 30 years, concluded that the complimentary litigation and business
practice of Van Etten made long term strategic and financial sense.
5. Represented Bottom & Feliton in its merger with Lewis,
Brisbois, Bisgaard & Smith
Bottom & Feliton, a 15
lawyer firm founded in 1981 and specializing in insurance defense, coverage and
bad faith brought a practice to Lewis, Brisbois.

Representative Partner Transactions and Mergers
The challenging economic climate has in the last three years significantly
impacted partner movement. Few, if any legal search firms have
successfully handled as many partners in as many different practice areas
throughout California as Esquire. In the last two and a half years alone
we have handled the moves of 29 partners, including several high profile
rainmakers. Most have been profiled in the Daily Journal. The following
are those we can disclose.
1. Represented Mark P. Wine as a partner to Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe.
2. Represented Edwin V. Woodsome, Jr. and
D. Barclay Edmundson as partners and several associates to Orrick, Herrington &
Sutcliffe.
Mr. Woodsome (J.D. Harvard 1971, Managing Editor, Harvard Law Review) who
has developed an international reputation in complex business litigation,
environmental and labor matters was a senior litigation partner and established
rainmaker at Howrey, Simon, Arnold & White. Previous to their seven years at
Howrey, he and Mr. Edmundson (J.D. UCLA 1979, Order of the Coif) spent their
careers at Munger Tolles & Olson. Mr. Woodsome has been consistently included in
the Daily Journal’s Annual Rainmaker ranking and upon his move was reported in
the Daily Journal as bringing a book estimated at $5M-$10M.
3. Represented Richard P. Crane, Jr. and Dennis M. P. Ehling as partners and several associates to Kirkpatrick & Lockhart.
Mr. Crane (J.D. Vanderbilt University
1964) formerly a senior trial lawyer in the U.S. Justice Department and who
managed more than 50 Justice Department litigators, specializes in complex
business litigation, intellectual property and white-collar crime. Mr. Crane,
formerly a senior partner with Musick, Peeler & Garrett, brought a multi-million
dollar practice. Mr. Ehling (J.D. Notre Dame 1993, cum laude) also
specializes in complex business litigation and intellectual property.
4. Represented Robert
Schulman as a partner to Fulbright & Jaworski.
Mr.
Schulman (J.D. Rutgers School of Law 1966) was a nine year Executive Committee
member and top revenue producer at Crosby, Heafey, Roach & May. Mr. Schulman
specializes in commercial litigation, insurance and reinsurance. Daily Journal
selected Mr. Schulman for its annual Rainmaker $5M edition in 2002.
5. Represented labor
partners Lee T. Paterson and Laura Petroff and five associates to Winston &
Strawn.
Mr.
Paterson (UCLA J.D. 1967) formerly national labor chair of Sonnenschein, Nath &
Rosenthal, brought a $4M practice and heads up Winston & Strawn’s West Coast
labor practice. Ms. Petroff (Vanderbilt J.D. 1980) was elected to the firm-wide
executive committee and selected as managing partner of the firm’s Los Angeles
office.

Represented Robert Lyon and Richard Lyon as partners to Holland & Knight.
Robert
(J.D. USC 1963, B.S.E.E. USC 1960) and Richard (J.D. University of Utah 1969,
B.S. Stanford 1966). The two nationally prominent partners, third and fourth
generation Lyons who were labeled "the pillars" at Lyon & Lyon brought more than
70 cumulative years of experience and relationships. The two are playing
leadership roles in expanding Holland & Knight’s I.P. practice on the West

7. Represented Douglas Dexter as a partner to Farella,
Braun & Martel.
Mr. Dexter
(J.D. University of San Diego 1984) one of the top labor partners in Northern
California was formerly a partner at O’Melveny & Myers specializing in labor and
employment. Mr. Dexter chairs the labor practice at Farella, Braun.
8. Represented William E. Thomson, Jr. as a partner to
Hogan & Hartson.
Mr. Thomson
(J.D. Georgetown University 1963), a prominent patent litigator specializing in
the biotech arena, formerly chaired the I.P. practice in the Los Angeles office
of McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen (now called Bingham, McCutchen).

Mr. Cohen
(Harvard School of Public Health - M.P.H., 1982, Boston University - J.D. 1977)
was previously Of Counsel to Irell & Manella and formerly with the U.S.
Department of Justice, Environmental Enforcement Section. Mr. Cohen joined the
firm as a partner and at one time chaired the firm's Environmental Practice
Group in Los Angeles.

Mr. Stubbs
(University of Missouri at Kansas City J.D. 1975) was formerly a corporate
partner with Hufstedler, Miller, Carlson & Beardsley. Mr. Stubbs helped build
the corporate and securities practice in Heller, Ehrman's Los Angeles office and
served as managing partner in 1993-1994.

Mr. Marder
(Loyola J.D. 1986) was formerly a litigation partner with Sonnenschein, Nath &

Ms. Johnson (J.D. New York Law School 1981)

Mr. Frandsen (J.D. Duke 1976)

Ms. Gray (J.D. Pepperdine University 1976) a well known Orange County trial
lawyer, was formerly a name partner and litigation chair at Resnick & Gray, and

office of Katten, Muchin a (500 lawyer firm based out of Chicago).

Mr. Nowotny (J.D. University of Arkansas 1987) formerly chair of the elder abuse

abuse practice. Ms. Walker (J.D. Southwestern University School of Law 1991)
also a Bonne, Bridges partner specializing in medical malpractice and elder

Mr. Harris (J.D. Pepperdine University 1989) was formerly a water polo All
American at USC and team member of the USA Team that won the World
Championships. Mr. Harris, who is co-managing Lewis, Brisbois Orange County
office, specializes in the construction area.
30. Represented Peter A. Davidson and Byron Moldo as partners to Oppenheimer, Wolff & Donnelly.
Mr. Davidson (UCLA, J.D. 1977, Managing Editor Law Review) and Mr. Moldo
(Southwestern, J.D. 1983) are both prominent bankruptcy lawyers in L.A. Mr.
Moldo, a U.S. bankruptcy trustee and Mr. Davidson have played a major role in
leading Oppenheimer's strategic growth and diversification objectives in
California.
31. Represented Timothy B. Bradford as a
partner and his medical device group to Crosby, Heafey, Roach & May.
Mr. Bradford (Loyola J.D. 1978) formerly a partner at Haight, Brown & Bonesteel,
is a leading products liability specialist with a particular expertise in
pharmaceuticals/medical devices litigation. An experienced trial attorney, Mr.
Bradford brought a significant amount of the Phen Fen litigation. The group
included associates Clare H. Dooley, David E. Stanley and Raymond Williams.
32. Represented Dennis Seley, Claudia Robinson, Robert
Shannon as partners and products liability group to Lewis, Brisbois, Bisgaard &
Smith.
Mr. Seley (McGeorge J.D. 1974), one of Sacramento’s top products liability trial
attorneys brought his 6 lawyer group which formed the core of Lewis, Brisbois's
entry into Sacramento. Mr. Seley formerly chaired a firmwide marketing group and
was the firm's managing partner in Sacramento for six years. The office now
numbers 16 attorneys. (

33. Represented Roger W. Rosendahl, Robert
E. Cambell and Garrison G. DeLee as partners to Baker & McKenzie.
Mr. Rosendahl (Georgetown University J.D. 1969; LL.M., 1971) joined Baker &
McKenzie as a partner specializing in complex international corporate
transactions. Mr. Rosendahl was formerly a partner with Donovan, Leisure, Newton
& Irvine. Also, litigator Robert E. Cambell (Vanderbilt University J.D. 1977;
LL.M. Georgetown University 1982) and corporate associate Garrison G. DeLee (U.S.C.
M.B.T., J.D., 1984), moved as part of the Rosendahl package.
34. Represented Richard Bane as a partner
(and group) to Lewis, Brisbois, Bisgaard & Smith.
Mr. Bane (Harvard; Boalt Hall J.D. 1981), one of the most prolific rainmakers in
San Bernardino and formerly a name partner of Kelly, Herlihy & Bane specialize
in bad faith litigation and general insurance. The addition of Mr. Bane and his
4 lawyer group added critical mass to Lewis, Brisbois’s San Bernardino office.

to McKenna & Cuneo.
Mr. Goldman (U.S.C. 1967), an experienced trial attorney and litigation chair at
Stephens, Berg & Lasater previously spent 23 years with Buchalter, Nemer, Fields
& Younger. Mr. Goldman is the third partner Esquire successfully represented to
McKenna & Cuneo. The placement of Mr. Goldman, the firm's top revenue-producer
helped facilitate the merger of Stephens, Berg & Lasater with McKenna & Cuneo.
36. Represented Ralph A. Kerstetter as a
partner to Arter & Hadden.
Mr. Kerstetter, (Boalt Hall J.D. 1979) a transactional lawyer has continued his
real estate, lease, project finance and secured lender transactional practice.
Mr. Kerstetter was a partner for several years with Lillick & McHose and a name
partner of a San Francisco law firm. He brought his 3 lawyer real estate group.
37. Represented Ronald K. Alberts as a
partner to Berger, Kahn, Shafton, Moss, Simon &
Gladstone.
Mr. Alberts (U.C. Davis J.D. 1981), a partner at Frye & Alberts
specializes in bad faith litigation, life, health and general insurance law. He

38. Represented Jack I. Samet as a partner
to Baker & Hostetler.
Mr. Samet (Harvard University J.D. 1964) was profiled in the California Law
Business cover story as "The Last Big Litigator" at Buchalter, Nemer, Fields &
Younger (Daily Journal, October 24, 1994). His distinguished trial record
includes both preparing and successfully arguing a major case before the U.S.
Supreme Court and cases before the Second and Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of
Appeals. Mr. Samet was recently elected to the firm's executive committee and is
now managing partner of the firm's L.A. office. Previously he was the firm's

Mr. Heyman (Harvard University J.D. 1969, cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa), an

Mr. Barnett, (Southern Methodist University, J.D. 1966, LL.M. 1972) a tax expert
who formerly spent a decade with Cox, Castle & Nicholson as their chief tax
attorney, was until recently the chair of Sonnenschein's tax department in Los
Angeles.

Ms. Klein (UCLA J.D. 1984) brought fifteen years experience handling

Mr. Huston (University of San Diego J.D. 1979), a well- known products liability

partner to Bryan Cave.
Mr. Petrulis (University of Illinois J.D. 1973), formerly of Petrulis
& Lich, has twenty plus years experience in Estate Planning, Wills & Trusts and
Probate Law. He is a past Chair of the Beverly Hills Bar Probate Section, serves

Mr. Biele (University of Utah J.D. 1968), a bankruptcy specialist and formerly
